Ivory Snow.
Was für ein Name.

Unvermittelt denke ich an Broken Flowers, da gab es eine Sun Green.
Nun, Ivory Snow ist nicht der Name der Band, nein, es ist der Name der Sängerin dieses Quartetts aus Cincinnati.
Mit ihr sind noch Ian Hilvert und Tyler Mechlem dabei und die drei machen als

SUNGAZE

auf ihrem jüngsten Werk
Light In All Of It
traumwandlerischen Shoegaze mit psychogenem Einschlag und Instrumentierung a la Allah-Las oder ähnlichen Combos, die den Touch der 60ger in die Jetztzeit herüberretten.

Sicher, Dreampop, Shoegaze, Psychfolk.. ist mittlerweile en vogue und in aller Munde und allerorten zu hören.

Hier jedoch ist eine ganz besondere Liebe zum Detail hörbar und spürbar.
Ausgefeilte Melodien treffen auf himmlisch anmutende Choräle, die nicht einfach hinzugefügt werden des Klangs willen, überdubt und zugekleistert, hier kommt Herzblut in knalligem Orangerot aus den Boxen und es ist eine Freude, den Vieren zuzuhören.

Eine instrumentale Einleitung, gleich mit zwei Stücken zu Beginn.
Samsara klingt in etwa so, wie Depeche Mode seit Jahrzenten nicht mehr klingen. Ja, doch, das passt, es passt ganz wunderbar.

Wenn dann in The Race endlich Ivorys Stimme die Führung übernimmt, ist dieser Traum in Weich nahezu perfekt.

SUNGAZE

umhüllen Dich mit ihrem Sound, der in seiner Bescheidenheit und Stille ein Kribbeln in der Magengrube auslöst. Snowpony hatten das früher mal drauf, mögen sie in Frieden ruhen.

Selbst energisches nach Vorne preschen der Gitarren reisst einen nicht aus diesem Zauber der wabernden Glückseligkeit sondern schmiegt sich wie ein liebebedürftiges Haustier an uns.

Ursprünglich als Soloprojekt von Ian der einen eher metallischen musikalischen Hintergund hat, inszeniert, wurde aus der Not eine Tugend, als er seine Stücke live präsentieren wollte und gerade kein passender Keyboarder zur Verfügung stand. Ivory, die schon als Kind mehr so im Spaß von einer Musiker-Karriere träumte, aber nie einen Instrumentalunterricht genossen hat, sprang ein – und es passte ganz prima.

Erinnerungen an Inspiral Carpets, Mojave 3 gar an die Cranes (The Sparrow) werden heraufbeschworen, ein ganz eigener Klangteppich rollt sich vor uns aus und schwappt überbordend in seiner Geschlossenheit und Dichte über unsere Köpfe.

Sie ergänzen sich wunderbar in ihrem Zusammenspiel – vielleicht liegt das an der Tatsache, dass Ivory und Ian nicht nur musikalisch ein Paar sind, sondern abseits der Musik im letzten Jahr nach langjähriger Beziehung geheiratet haben. Sie scheinen sich zu ergänzen und zu beflügeln und schaffen auf ihrem Debüt einen Hauch von Unsterblichkeit, so zeitlos, so wunderbar tönt es, orgelt es sehnsüchtig, vibriert es, jault es. Nie jedoch ohne den Klang des Ganzen außer Acht zu lassen.

Suddenly I think of Broken Flowers, there was a Sun Green.
Well, Ivory Snow isn’t the name of the band, no, it’s the name of the singer of this threesome from Cincinnati.
With her Ian Hilvert and Tyler Mechlem are still in the band and the three of them are doing as

SUNGAZE

on their debut-Album
Light In All Of It
dreamlike ‚traumwandlerischen‘ Shoegaze with psychogenic impact and instrumentation a la Allah-Las or similar Combos, which save the touch of the 60’s into the present time.

Sure, Dreampop, Shoegaze, Psychfolk… is now en vogue for a couple of years and can be heard everywhere.

Here, however, a very special love of detail can be heard and felt.
Sophisticated melodies meet heavenly chorals, which are not simply added for the sake of sound, overdubbed and pasted, here comes heart blood in bright orange red from the speakers and it is a pleasure to listen to the band.

An instrumental introduction, with two pieces at the beginning.
Samsara sounds something like Depeche Mode hasn’t sounded for decades. Yes, but that fits, it fits wonderfully.

When Ivory’s voice finally takes the lead in The Race, this smooth and mellow dream is almost perfect.

SUNGAZE

Wrap you up with their sound, which in its modesty and silence triggers a tingling sensation in the pit of the stomach. Snowpony used to have that, may they rest in peace.

Even the energetic rush to the front of the guitars doesn’t pull you out of this magic of wafting bliss but nestles up to us like a pet in need of love.

Originally staged as a solo project by Ian, who has a rather metallic musical background, the necessity became a virtue when he wanted to present his songs live and no suitable keyboarder was available. Ivory, who already dreamed of a career as a musician in a funny way as a child, but never enjoyed instrumental lessons, jumped in – and it fit perfectly.

Memories of Inspiral Carpets, Mojave 3 even of the Cranes (The Sparrow) are conjured up, a very special carpet of sound rolls out in front of us and overflows our heads in its unity and density.

They complement each other wonderfully in their interplay – perhaps this is due to the fact that Ivory and Ian are not only musically a couple, but also married last year after a long relationship. They seem to work together as a whole and inspire each other and create on their debut a breath of immortality, so timeless, so wonderful it sounds, organizes it longingly, vibrates it, howls it.
But never without disregarding the sound of
Light In All Of It.
We thank them for it.
