MARISSA NADLERs
Musik als Gothic-Folk zu bezeichnen ist schon deftig unpassend.
Zumindest, was das eben kürzlichst erschienene neue Album
The Path Of The Clouds
anhört.

Das hier ist Pop.
Unter Umständen ein wenig melancholisch, sicher aber nicht Gothic und sicher nur bedingt Folk.
Aber über Begriffe lässt sich viel diskutieren und eine Bezeichnung der Musik ist eh nur zweitrangig interessant.
Viel wichtiger eben die Musik an sich.
Und die ist langsam, bedächtig, durchdacht und zurückgenommen, Stimmungskanonen werden hier vergeblich gesucht, die triste Herbstlichkeit ist dann viel eher tonangebend. Dazu eher elfenhaft schwebende Klänge mit viel Piano und entspannten, dem Flüstern nahem Gesang.

Die behandelten Themen waren für die während des Lockdowns entstandenen Songs eher begrenzt verfügbar, wenn man seine Bezüge aus Kontakten mit der Außenwelt holt.
Daher wurden hier von bewußt Bezüge zur Serie US-Mystery-Serie „Unsolved Mysteries“ die sich mit Geschichten um Morde und Verbrechen hergestellt, da dies eine von MARISSA’s Beschäftigungen während der Kontaktbeschränkung war.

Herausgekommen ist eine gut nebenbei hörbare Platte, die trotz illustrer Unterstützung von Emma Ruth Rundle oder Mary Lattimore allerdings weder sonderlich spannend, noch beeindruckend oder außergewöhnlich daherkommt. Nichts halbes und nichts Ganzes, vielleicht ist das das Schlimmste, was man über eine Musik sagen kann. Das lasse ich dann besser.

So, slow down.
To say
MARISSA NADLER’s
music should be titled with gothic folk is already inappropriate.
At least, as far as the recently released new album
The Path Of The Clouds
sounds like.
This is pop.
Maybe a little melancholic, but certainly not gothic and certainly only partly folk.
But there is a lot to discuss about terms and a description of the music is only of secondary interest anyway.
Much more important is the music itself.
And this is slow, thoughtful, thoughtful and withdrawn, mood cannons are looked for in vain here, the dreary autumnalness is then much more tone-setting. In addition, rather elfin floating sounds with a lot of piano and relaxed vocals close to a whisper.
The treated topics were available for the songs created during the lockdown rather limited, if you get your references from contacts with the outside world.
Therefore here from consciously references to the series US mystery series „Unsolved Mysteries“ which deals with stories around murders and crimes were made, since this was one of MARISSA’s occupations during the contact restriction.
The result is a record that can be listened to well on the side, but despite illustrious support from Emma Ruth Rundle or Mary Lattimore, it comes across as neither particularly exciting nor impressive or extraordinary. Nothing half and nothing whole, maybe that’s the worst thing you can say about a music. I’d better leave it at that.
