Also, wenn nochmal jemand sagt, dieser oder jener Künstler hätte eine einprägsame Stimme und wenn dann nicht im gleichen Atemzug

genannt wird, also, nein, dann weiß ich auch nicht.
Das ist so… beeindruckend und ganz anders.
Das ist eine schräge Hommage an die alten Sternchen des großen Gesangskinos, ein Schritt zurück in die Zeit der unantastbaren Hollywood-Diven, ein Werk das unter die Haut geht und Spaß dabei hat, ein paarmal kräftig hinlangt und danach genußvoll die Wunden leckt.

Ob Glamour oder Folk, Gospel oder theatralisches Singspiel, hier wird jeder fündig und wer nicht mindestens einmal beeindruckt seinen Blick hebt, dem ist eh nicht zu helfen.
Das ist zwischen … ein großes Kunststück, erhaben, mitreißend, besonders.
Ob Janis Joplin oder Diamanda Galas, ob Marianne Faithful oder Bonnie Tyler – hier wird man fündig, wenn man auf besondere Stimme/Stimmlage steht.
Da traut man seinen Ohren kaum, wenn man das Cover betrachtet oder sich Pressefotos der Künstlerin anschaut. Die…?
Also, ich meine, diese doch eher zierliche Person soll dieses Organ.. also..
Wow.
Versteckte Anspielungen, ein fortwährendes Getümmel in bluesig-folksigen Balladen a la Bob Dylan, what a place to be und noch einmal, was für eine Stimme..
Alles hier brodelt und pulsiert. Alles ist in Bewegung, scheint von Song zu Song in Veränderung,

mit ihrer neuen Scheibe nicht mindestens für wochenlange Furore sorgen wird, dann.. ist etwas falsch in Musikhausen. Ich mein, das wissen wir ja eh, aber.. dieses beeindruckende Album weicht nicht von Deiner Seite.
Es fordert, schreit, verstreut Selbstbewußtsein ohne Ende (This Day In May)
und klopft dabei rücksichtslos zärtlich an unsere intimsten Gedanken.

Wenn dann im Titelstück die Gitarren kreischen und das Unternehmen ein wenig aus dem Ruder zu laufen droht, ist dies genau der Moment, in dem Cummings mit her only voice das alles rettet und zurück geleitet.
Das ist Melancholie, das ist Theater, das ist großartige Unterhaltung, abseits von Gewohnheiten. Sie scheint mit einem ungeahnt riesigen Selbstbewusstsein ausgestattet und wirkt sie dabei als Musikerin trotzdem verletzbar und unglaublich nah dran und umwerfend persönlich.
Über das Titelstück des Albums sagt Grace im Clash-Interview, dass es sich hierbei um das Stück handelt, welches als letztes vor den Albumaufnahmen entstanden ist und es sich nach wie vor um ihren Lieblingssong vom Album handelt.
Sie wollte das Stück rau und hart und häßlich, mit Feuer und roher Energie.
Letzten Endes und mit Unterstützung von Harry Cooper (Baritonsax) und Cahill Kenny am Piano wurde Storm Queen größer als sie es sich vorgestellt hatte.

Wenn wir mit der heulenden Fidel unsere Augen schließen und uns auf dieses spannende Abenteuer einlassen, werden wir belohnt von ungewohnten Tönen und der Gewißheit, hier einer Künstlerin zugehört zu haben, von der noch sehr häufig die Rede sein wird und die mit ihrem Talent sicher noch für Aufmerksamkeit sorgen wird.

So, if someone says again, this or that artist has a catchy voice and if not then in the same breath
GRACE CUMMINGS
in the same breath, well, no, I don’t know.
That’s so… impressive and very different.
This is a quirky homage to the old starlets of great vocal cinema, a step back in time to the days of untouchable Hollywood divas, a work that gets under your skin and has fun doing it, banging on hard a few times and then licking your wounds with relish.
Whether glamour or folk, gospel or theatrical singsong, everyone will find something here, and if you don’t raise your eyes at least once, you can’t be helped anyway.
This is between … a great feat, sublime, stirring, special.
Whether Janis Joplin or Diamanda Galas, whether Marianne Faithfull or Bonnie Tyler – here you will find what you are looking for if you are into special voices.
You can hardly believe your ears when you look at the cover or press photos of the artist. That’s her…?
Well, I mean, this rather petite person is supposed to have this organ… so.
Wow.
Hidden allusions, a perpetual bustle in bluesy folky ballads a la Bob Dylan, what a place to be and once again, what a voice….
Everything here is bubbling and pulsing. Everything is in motion, seeming to change from song to song,

GRACE CUMMINGS
won’t cause a furore for at least weeks with her new disc, then… something is wrong in Musikhausen. I mean, we know that anyway, but… this impressive album doesn’t leave your side.
It demands, screams, scatters self-confidence without end (This Day In May)
and knocks ruthlessly tenderly on our most intimate thoughts.

When the guitars screech in the title track and the enterprise threatens to get a little out of hand, this is exactly the moment when Cummings with her only voice saves it all and guides it back.
This is melancholy, this is theater, this is great entertainment, away from habit. She seems endowed with an unexpectedly huge self-confidence, and yet she comes across as vulnerable and incredibly close and stunningly personal as a musician.
About the album’s title track, Grace says in the Clash interview that it’s the track that came last before the album was recorded and it’s still her favorite song from the album.
She wanted the track to be raw and hard and ugly, with fire and raw energy.
In the end, and with the support of Harry Cooper (baritone sax) and Cahill Kenny on piano, Storm Queen became bigger than she had imagined. If we close our eyes with the howling fiddle and engage in this exciting adventure, we will be rewarded by unfamiliar sounds and the certainty of having listened here to an artist who will be talked about very often and who will surely attract attention with her talent.
