Sie machen meist ruhige Musik.
Also, nicht wirklich dieses verlangsamte Slow-Core-Dingens, aber es ist schon eher still bis gediegen indiepoppig – und die Songs auf ihrem Debüt
Rest Lurks
das vor wenigen Tagen bei Rock Action Records erschienen ist, sind eher zum Engtanz als zu zuckenden Bewegungen geeignet.
Es gibt so Menschen, die können nicht ohne.
Also, ohne Arbeit beispielsweise.
Die beiden Herren von Arab Strap haben es nicht nur innerhalb dieser Konstellation geschafft, nachdem es fast schien, als sei die Band zum Erliegen gekommen, ein ziemlich großartiges Wiederkehr-Album zu schaffen.
Letztes Jahr hat Aidan Moffat gemeinsam mit The Twilight Sad-Mastermind James Graham die bemerkenswert eigenartigen Gentle Sinners ins Leben gerufen, nun legt Malcolm Middleton seinerseits nach.
Mit Joel Harries entstand die Idee zu
LICHEN SLOW.
Ihr Projekt nennen sie gleichberechtigt, freundschaftlich, bla-bla, Bandgedöns.
Und sie kriegen es tatsächlich hin, hier weitab des Einheitsbreis ziemlich eingängige independent Pop-Songs zu erschaffen, frei von Zwang und offenbar mit Spaß bei der Sache. So soll es sein.
Ihre Stimmen könnten unterschiedlicher kaum sein, das sonore, tiefe, akzentuierte Gemurmel Middletons steht hier dem oft der weiblichen Tonart nahen Hochstimme seines Konterfeis gegenüber.
Wenn Songs wie Preset aus den Lautsprechern tönen, könnte man meinen, es seien die alten Arab Strap, die in meiner Gefühlsgehirnhälfte schon immer beiwohnten und nie die Nähe der ebenfalls ganz wunderbaren Belle & Sebastian leugnen konnten.
Das hat Flair, das hat Spontanität, das wirkt unaufgeregt schön und befreit.
Ein Album für Viele.
Leider werden es die meisten der Vielen überhaupt nicht wahrnehmen.

Well, not really that slowed down slow core thingy, but it’s more quiet to dignified indie pop – and the songs on their debut
Rest Lurks
released a few days ago on Rock Action Records, are more suited to tight dancing than twitching.
There are such people who can’t do without.
Well, without work, for example.
The two gentlemen of Arab Strap have managed not only within this constellation, after it almost seemed that the band had come to a standstill, to create a pretty great return album.
Last year Aidan Moffat teamed up with The Twilight Sad mastermind James Graham to create the remarkably peculiar Gentle Sinners, and now Malcolm Middleton is following suit in his turn.
With Joel Harries the idea for
LICHEN SLOW.
They call their project equal, amicable, blah-blah, band shenanigans.
And they actually manage to create quite catchy independent pop songs far away from the standard brew, free of constraint and obviously having fun doing it. That’s how it should be.
Their voices could hardly be more different, the sonorous, deep, accentuated murmur of Middleton contrasts here with the high-pitched voice of his counterpart, often close to the female key.
When songs like Preset sound from the speakers, one could think it’s the old Arab Strap, who have always attended in my emotional brain and could never deny the proximity of the also quite wonderful Belle & Sebastian.
This has flair, this has spontaneity, this seems unexcited beautiful and liberated.
An album for many.
Unfortunately, most of the many will not notice it at all.
