Pete Doherty kann Musik.
Das ist, unzweifelhaft, bereits mehrfach bewiesen.
Das er durch Alkohol und possibilitätshalber andere Dinge oftmals eben keine Musik zustande brachte, Dude, so ist es eben. So ist es eben, fuck, egal, ey. Ja?
Mit Carl Barat und seinen anderen Helferlingen schafft er nun die Veröffentlichung des neuen Studioalbums der Band.
THE LIBERTINES
are back.
Nicht nur so, nicht for good, sondern, mit ihren neuen Songs, die klar artikuliert und strukturiert und durchdacht daherkommen und eine äußerst gelungene Darstellung ergeben und für mehr als prima Unterhaltung sorgen.
Dieser jugendliche Leichtsinn scheint in einigen Songs offenbar abhanden gekommen zu sein oder ersetzt worden durch fein abgestimmtes Power-Engagement oder aber man hat sich und es unter Kontrolle.
Wenn mittelalte Musiker melodiesuchenden Punk-Pop zelebrieren und auf der Suche nach dem perfekten Song sind, kommt so etwas heraus.
Der erste Höhepunkt des Albums ist I Have A Friend, in dem die vertrackte Melodie einen schon einlullt bevor man sich dem exaltierten Gitarrengedresche hingibt, um nur Momente später durch den butterweich zelebrierten Gesang wieder einschmeichelnd eingefangen wird.

Wie nicht immer in Verbindung mit Doherty soll es um die Musik gehen.
Bei bekannter Vorgeschichte der Bandgenossen jedoch sei dieser kurze interpretative Einschub genehmigt, bitte.
All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade
erscheint in Zeiten, in denen die pandemische Krise nicht mehr unbedingt nachwirkt und beim Gedankenverschwenden daran eine Art ungläubiges Staunen zurückbleibt.
Um so wichtiger ist Konstanz und Substanz und beides scheint mittlerweile für die Jungens kein Problem mehr darzustellen. Ist doch Pete gerade (…) Papa geworden, ist in Frankreich wohnhaft und scheint ein wenig angekommen, sind doch schon länger keine eskapistischen Drogenabusus zu Gehör gekommen.
Jedenfalls, die Band ist da, ist aktuell und klingt erholt und entspannt.
Was für mein Dafürhalten noch vor Zeiten geradezu undenkbar schien.
Wir werden alle älter.
Das beste: Sie klingen nice, geordnet (meist), unterhalten mehr gut als geht so und wirken wie eine Band, um die man sich keine Sorgen machen muss und deren Musik man einfach hören kann. Nicht muss, aber sollte.
Merry Old England hat sogar Potential für Größeres. Da ist die alte Magie und man staunt und taucht ein und fühlt sich gut, ja sehr gut, ja wunderbar.
So etwas wie Dankbarkeit, ja Freude wird ausgeschüttet, hier jetzt.
Das.. überrascht.
Oft war es in der Vergangenheit eher so, dass sich über die Band und deren Members unterhalten wurde als dass eine Auseinandersetzung mit deren Musik selbst erfolgt ist.
Nun, die Skandale sind beiseite geschoben und die Musik..?
Es sind die eher ruhigen Momente, die hier zu beeindrucken wissen.
Es ist hier auch das orchestrale Drumherum (und Chöre, ja, lalalaa..!) und der Hintergrund der Songs, welcher immer wieder für angenehme Momente sorgt.
THE LIBERTINES
sind wieder da und sie sind zurück und man freut sich ja doch.
All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade
ist da und alle waren neugierig, wohin die Reise geht, in welche Richtung man demnächst abbiegen möchte und wie man am schnellsten ans Ziel gelangt.
Was das Ziel ist?
Werden wir sehen – sofern die aufgeflammte Freude der Besatzung aufrecht erhalten werden kann und sich das Ganze in der hier präsentierten Art für die Beteiligten soviel hörbaren Spaß macht.

Pete Doherty can make music.
That has, undoubtedly, already been proven several times.
The fact that he often didn’t manage to make music due to alcohol and other things, Dude, that’s just the way it is. That’s the way it is, fuck, whatever. Yes?
With Carl Barat and his other helpers, he now manages to release the band’s new studio album.
THE LIBERTINES
are back.
Not just like that, not for good, but with their new songs, which are clearly articulated, structured and well thought out, resulting in an extremely successful performance and providing more than great entertainment.
This youthful recklessness seems to have been lost in some songs or replaced by finely tuned power commitment or else they have themselves and it under control.
When middle-aged musicians celebrate melody-seeking punk pop and are in search of the perfect song, something like this comes out.
The first highlight of the album is I Have A Friend, in which the intricate melody lulls you to sleep before you surrender to the exalted guitar drumming, only to be captured again moments later by the buttery-soft vocals.

As is not always the case with Doherty, it’s all about the music.
However, if the bandmates‘ previous history is known, please allow this short interpretative insert.
All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade
is being released at a time when the pandemic crisis is no longer necessarily having an after-effect, leaving us with a kind of incredulous amazement when we think about it.
Consistency and substance are all the more important, and both no longer seem to be a problem for the boys. After all, Pete has just (…) become a dad, lives in France and seems to have arrived a little, as no escapist drug abuse has been heard for some time.
In any case, the band is here, is up to date and sounds relaxed and refreshed.
Which, in my opinion, seemed almost unthinkable some time ago.
We’re all getting older.
The best thing: they sound nice, organized (most of the time), entertain well more than they can and seem like a band you don’t have to worry about and whose music you can just listen to. Not must, but should.
Merry Old England even has potential for greater things. There is the old magic and you are amazed and immersed and feel good, yes very good, yes wonderful.
Something like gratitude, even joy is poured out, here now.
That… is surprising.
In the past, it was often the case that people talked about the band and its members rather than engaging with the music itself.
Now, the scandals have been put aside and the music…?
It is the rather quiet moments that know how to impress here.
It’s also the orchestral background (and choirs, yes, lalalaa…!) and the background of the songs that always provide pleasant moments.

are back and they are back and we are happy about it.

is here and everyone was curious to find out where the journey would take them, which direction they would like to take next and how to get to their destination as quickly as possible.
What is the destination?
We’ll see – as long as the crew’s enthusiasm can be maintained and the whole thing is as much audible fun for those involved as it is presented here.
