Adrienne Lenker und ihre musikalischen Weggenossen Bass – Max Oleartchik, Gitarre – Buck Meek Schlagzeug – James Krivchenia machen auf ihrem neuen Album dass, wonach ihnen der Sinn steht.
Sind sie doch mittlerweile in einer Position, wo sie sich ohne zu überlegen einiges herausnehmen können und die Freiheit, dies zu tun wird auf Ihrem neuen Doppelalbum
Dragon Warm New Mountain I Believe In You
schon großspurig genutzt.

So haben wir stille Momente, sozusagen akustische Folksongs, so haben wir Americana-/countrylastige Songs und zudem eher wie zusammengesetzte Bruchstücke funktionierende Experimental-Brocken, die jedwede Anknüpfungspunkte an bereits gekannte Form von
BIG THIEF
-Songs
rundheraus ausschliessen.
Man könnte auch sagen, hier wird all das gemacht, was schon immer irgendwie gemacht werden wollte. Jeder hatte, wo durch den weltweiten Ausnahmezustand Freiraum eher Mangelware und die Ausnahme waren, musikalisch und kompositorisch genügend Möglichkeiten sich auszutoben und Ideen einzubringen.
Pandemiebedingt sind die Songs eher unkonventionell entstanden, an vier verschiedenen Orten, mit verschiedenen Unterstützern. Im Topanga Canyon von Kalifornien, im New Yorker Umland, in Tucson Arizona und der Bergwelt von Colorado sind in Zusammenarbeit mit verschiedenen Musikern und Technikern 45 Songs entstanden, bunt zusammengewürfelt. Dann kam die Auswahl.
Herausgekommen ist ein Album, das man erst nach mehreren Durchgängen entdecken, begreifen kann, ohne quasi bei jedem Song überrascht zu werden.
Okay, heißt es zu Beginn, Change heißt es zu Beginn.
Das hier ist anders, das ist neu, aber vielleicht ist es auch einfach eine Weiterentwicklung. Vielleicht ist es eine Spielart von vielen.
Ein Fortschreiben der Bandgeschichte, die einfach geschehen ist, nicht geplant wurde, nicht vorhergesehen. Wobei dies aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach den persönlchen Vorlieben der Bandmember geschuldet ist.
Und wo wir eben bei nicht vorhersehbar sind: Spud Infinity kommt dermaßen schräg daher, dass man sich einem einem leichten Grinsen nicht erwähren kann.
„What’s it gonna taaaaaaaaake?“
Man weiß es nicht.
Was man aber weiß ist, das einen diese Zeile im Kopf stunden-, ja, tagelang verfolgt.
Insgesamt wirkt dieses Album wie eine Entdeckerreise ins Land des Country, des Americana und der bislang eher unbekannten Seiten dieser Band. Als wären sie aufgebrochen, um der breiten Masse, die sie aufgrund ihrer Bekanntheit mühelos erreichen können, diesen dann doch eher nicht Mainstream Musikstil näherzubringen.
Nun – für mich persönlich bleibt es beim Versuch.

Wirft man nebenbei einen Blick auf die Produktivität der Band, kann man nur anerkennend den Kopf neigen: Neben den zwei Alben aus dem Jahr 2019 haben Adrienne und Buck ganz nebenbei noch Soloalben veröffentlicht und werfen hier nun 20 Songs in 80 Minuten in die Waagschale, in einer Zeit, in der schon 5 Songs in 20 Minuten als „Album“ verkauft werden, was, auch mit Blick auf die Kosten für die Fans als eher lachhaft durchgeht.

Ein durchweg positiver Lichtblick und inmitten des countryfolk-esken Gesamtbildes bildet Blurred View mit aufregendem Electrobeat, psychotischem Hintergrund und verfremdeter Stimme eine Laune-machende Ausnahme, während die Countryballaden Dried Roses und Red Moon eher hintenrunterfallen.

Ein schräges Ding, ein überraschendes Werk mit Songs, die den Fans einiges zu kauen auf den Weg gibt, die manche überfordern wird und die ansonsten der Menge der Indie-Fans einen Haufen bemerkenswert überraschender Klänge zum Jahresbeginn präsentiert.

Adrienne Lenker and her musical companions bass – Max Oleartchik, guitar – Buck Meek drums – James Krivchenia do on their new album what they feel like.
In the meantime they are in a position where they can take a lot of things without thinking and the freedom to do this is shown on their new double album
Dragon Warm New Mountain I Believe In You
is already used in a big way.
So we have quiet moments, so to speak acoustic folk songs, so we have Americana-/country-heavy songs and moreover experimental chunks that function more like assembled fragments, which have any connection to already known form of
BIG THIEF
-songs
are completely excluded.
One could also say, here everything is made what always wanted to be made somehow. Everyone had, where by the worldwide state of emergency free space was rather scarce and the exception, musically and compositionally enough possibilities to let off steam and to bring in ideas.
Due to the pandemic, the songs were created rather unconventionally, in four different places, with different supporters. In the Topanga Canyon of California, in the New York countryside, in Tucson Arizona and the mountains of Colorado, 45 songs were created in collaboration with various musicians and technicians, colorfully thrown together. Then came the selection.
The result is an album that you can only discover and understand after several passes, without being surprised by every song, so to speak.
Okay, it says at the beginning, Change says at the beginning.
This is different, this is new, but maybe it’s just a further development. Maybe it’s one game of many.
A continuation of the band’s history that simply happened, not planned, not foreseen. Although this is most likely not the case, but rather due to the personal preferences of the band members.
And while we are on the subject of unpredictable: Spud Infinity comes along so weird that you can’t resist a slight grin.
„What’s it gonna taaaaaaake?“
You don’t know.
What you do know is that this line will haunt you in your head for hours, yes, days.
Overall, this album feels like a voyage of discovery into the land of country, Americana and the previously rather unknown sides of this band. As if they had set out to bring this rather non-mainstream style of music closer to the masses, which they can easily reach due to their fame.
Well – for me personally it remains with the attempt.
If you take a look at the productivity of the band, you can only bow your head appreciatively: In addition to the two albums from 2019 Adrienne and Buck have quite incidentally released solo albums and throw here now 20 songs in 80 minutes in the scale, in a time in which already 5 songs in 20 minutes are sold as an „album“, which, even with a view to the cost to the fans pass as rather laughable.
A consistently positive bright spot and in the midst of the countryfolk-esque overall picture Blurred View with exciting electrobeat, psychotic background and alienated voice forms a mood-making exception, while the country ballads Dried Roses and Red Moon rather fall behind.
A weird thing, a surprising work with songs that will give fans something to chew on, that will overwhelm some, and that otherwise presents the crowd of indie fans with a bunch of remarkably surprising sounds to start the year with.
